An important tool for any FeederWatcher is a field guide. A good field guide will include:
- detailed drawings or photos illustrating the variation in plumage of the male and female of each species, as well as the subtle differences in appearance due to age, season, and geographic region
- highlights of the diffences between hard to distinguish, similar-looking species
- maps of the species’ breeding, winter, and year-round ranges
The choice of which field guide is best for you is really a subjective decision. There are a number of wonderful guides on the market, each with it’s own advantages and disadvantages.
