Description

While walking the grounds of a local University, I almost stepped on this female(?) Yellow-bellied Sapsucker. Her body was laying just off the edge of the sidewalk. She had recently flown into the highly reflective glass windows of the Student Center and succumbed as a result of the impact. I checked to see if the Sapsucker was banded, since the University has an extensive Ornithology Dept. and bird banding program. She was not one of their recorded birds. I wonder if raptor silhouettes on their windows might have saved this one?
