Description

I was keeping an eye on a nest in Biddeford Pool. On June 9, I arrived at the beach at 5:30, mom still sitting on the eggs. I photographed some shorebirds and some terns and at 7:00AM I observed three chicks in the dunes next to the fenced off nesting area. This chick was at most 90 minutes old when it grabbed this crane fly.

Species

Precocial Indeed

This just hatched (literally) Piping Plover chick was ready to snag it's first meal, a crane fly, not much smaller than the bird.
