I was taking a coffee break on a long lonely stretch of highway in Alaska, watching the ducks in this icy pond. Suddenly two Trumpeter Swans joined them, followed by four more. There wasn’t much open water and the ducks frequently gave way when the swans went for a swim. I had another 12 hours of driving before I arrived home, I’m not sure how much flying the swans had to do until they arrived on their tundra breeding ground.
