Description

Our one acre lot has wooded lakeshore and upland habitat with various brushes and trees. In May we see a number of bird species as they pass through on their migration northernward; some using our feeders. Brown Thrashers are usually found in thickets, secretively foraging on the ground for insects, etc. This one surprised us by being on the suet feeder in the middle of the day in our open yard. The Brown Thrasher has been in the yard for about 5 days now in Bangor Maine. I ha e never saw one before.. He is fat and looks healthy. I put some suet on the ground for him other then berries that maybe around do not know what bird seed he would eat?

I have a pair of Brown Thrashers at my platform and suet feeders, previously only seen them “thrashing” around on the ground. Love their morning calls and when they come to the feeders. Awesome birds! Is it possible they have wintered over in NW Maine?

Holly Grant, Project Assistant says:

Hi Steve, While Brown Thrashers typically only breed in Maine, there have been some sightings outside of the breeding season. You can view a map here of reported sightings from December through February last winter.

Atlanta, Georgia: We are very lucky! We have a few regular breeding pairs that live on our property. We have left our bushes and hedgerows alone for them to nest. Surprisingly the young thrashers have stayed and are feeding regularly on our seed and suet feeders! I also leave them meal worm as treats.
