I kept a supply of oranges for the birds last summer - the usual takers were orioles and red bellied woodpeckers. This little downy must have decided to see what the big attraction was. First, in typical woodpecker style, it had a good old peck at the peel, and only when that failed to yield any results did it give the flesh a try. It seemed to enjoy the experience, but I never saw a repeat of this behavior. Perhaps oranges didn't agree with it after all.
