A pair of Red-Bellied Woodpeckers were preparing this cavity for nesting, but the Male Northern Flicker had his eyes on it, too. For days, the Flicker would perch in this spot, drumming and calling, while the Red-Bellies would perch in or around the entrance. The Red Bellies won this battle over the Flickers, but unfortunately lost a second battle with the European Starlings!
