Description

The week before the Blizzard of 2016 slammed the East Coast, it was very cold here… and very windy! This hermit thrush sat in the sun and puffed up all his feathers to keep himself warm. And to protect his eyes from the biting wind, he drew the translucent, pale blue nictitating membrane over them. Many birds have these extra eyelids to provide a special layer of protection for their eyes. Capturing it on camera was so cool!

Thank you Theresa!!! He was pretty close, but usually had branches and brush in front of him. I had to hide and stay very still until he came out 🙂
