Description

10/11/15 I’m shooting a Merlin in the morning, light is perfect, he’s just sitting on a branch, a monarch butterfly lands in the pine tree right next to him.
His attention goes all to the butterfly next thing you know…he pounces catches the Monarch flies about 20 yards and then let’s it go

Great photo, Ed! I liked this the first time you posted it and still do!

How strange! Especially the fact that he caught it at all, monarchs are poisonous so it is weird the Merlin even tried to catch it.Practice for catching small birds and animals perhaps? Very beautiful image, and unique story.
