Description

A Sharp-Shinned Hawk has taken up residence in the backyard. At 10:06 AM while watching a variety of birds out the window, in swoops the Sharp-Shinned with lightning speed, striking a Starling and sending all others flying off a screeching. The screeching of the starling and other birds was quite loud even from inside the house. As I watched the hawk fly off, I noticed he dropped the starling amongst the trees, not sure if he retrieved it.

Classic mantling behaviour, "The action of hunching or arching shoulders and spreading wings over a recent kill to conceal it from other birds and predators who would be potential thieves."
