Description

A pair of Great Horned Owls was nesting near our campsite at Usery Mountain Regional Park in the Sonoran Desert. At dawn and dusk, the adults could be seen perched atop the saguaro cacti, silently scanning their environs. This was a lifer for me during the trip, and (myself coming from eastern Canada) I certainly never expected to see my first Great Horned Owls in a desert environment.

I took this photo while participating in McGill University’s Desert Ecology field course, in April 2015.
