Description

When the Polar Vortex blew through, birds were looking for food! I have lots of species hit the cedar log filled with suet – and on this cold morning, the downy (background) kept kicking the ruby crowned kinglet off! Not ready to give up, the kinglet flashed it’s signature red streak and stayed on for some suet! Hard to get a good picture of the kinglet, because it’s so fast, but I happen to get a (not great quality) shot of the red streak, which I understand isn’t all too common, especially in the winter. I was thrilled to get to see it – both birds ended up with plenty to eat that day.

Polar Vortex Brings Out Hot Streak

The ruby-crowned kinglet flashed his red streak at the downy woodpecker, who kept kicking him off the suet filled cedar log during the Polar Vortex here in Texas.
