In late April, ruby-throated hummingbirds start appearing at my front-yard feeders in Virginia. They’re especially active come late summer as they’re fattening up for the long flight south. Many mornings, as on the August day the photo was taken, I sat in my car with the driver-side window rolled down and my camera trained on the house, hoping to catch a hummer in flight. Like clockwork, they did not disappoint!
