Description

This juvenile Red-Shouldered Hawk was born in the woods behind our home. When I look out to the feeders and nearby oak tree to find my favorite songbirds, I don’t usually expect to see a large accipiter within the vicinity. Assumptions could be made that she was hunting for a nice juicy feeder bird. She was actually hunting large insects in the pasture! I was so fortunate to get very close to her as she pummeled this bug into the fence post. I couldn’t believe my eyes when I saw those talons and that sharp beak hunting for invertebrates. She’s not the most unique backyard visitor but she certainly stood out from the crowd on this day.
