I hadn’t seen a Red Headed Woodpecker in many years… but I was visiting my brother in Northern Michigan this past spring and low and behold this beauty flew onto his suet feeder. Then after a quick meal flew up to this tree. It appeared (s)he was exploring the possibility of building a nest in the tree as the bird kept returning to the same tree, pounding away at the same spot. What a special moment and I was thrilled to capture a number of decent images of this striking, and seemingly scarce bird.
