Description

This handsome Ruby throated hummingbird was the resident male busy guarding the feeder all summer. No matter the weather..he was never out of view. He would even temporarily chase off many of the females, so they had to come up with unique ways to not be seen. Using the small branches of the azalea bush just in front of the feeder I watched one female flip upside down on her branch so that only her belly was showing. She arched her head back and remained in that position, frozen while the male scanned the area. It worked well and he didn’t see her. Once he was off chasing another, she was free to fill her tummy with sweet goodness. It was amazing to watch!
