Distance and lighting were a challenge, but I still had to share this moment. There were actually four Pileateds on that backyard red oak before I ran to get my camera. I hesitated at first, because the question always is, Do you stay and observe something you’ve never seen before, or do you reach for the camera, hoping to record something you’ll never see again. The cost, in this case, was one bird. I think of it as a gift from & back to the bird gods. — Backyard, Alexandria, VA, 2/6/18
