A few years ago, we noticed this beautiful girl hanging around the backyard. She is a leucistic pied Northern Cardinal — we named her Lucy. We had read that they are usually shunned by the other cardinals, so we were thrilled to see a male feeding her during mating season. Lucy was around for over a year, then sadly disappeared. Since then, we’ve seen several leucistic Northern Cardinals. We like to think they are her decedents. Of course, they are all named Lucy — Lucy Jr., Lucy III, etc.
