Description

It was the last day of our vacation in California, and I was walking along the cliffs at La Jolla Cove, enjoying the final few rays of the sun before it set. The cliff birds, cormorants and pelicans, had returned from the sea and were preparing to roost. This particular pelican, preening himself before nightfall, was beautifully illuminated by the dying sun and stood out perfectly against the cliffs beyond, which were already in deep shadow. I was very happy with all the birds that I saw and photographed on that trip, but this picture of the pelican carefully attending to his feathers, is probably my favorite.
