Description

An adult Chipping Sparrow being asked to feed an immature Brown Headed Cowbird. Brown Headed Cowbird eggs are laid in the nests of other birds, like Chipping Sparrows, and those parents dutifully raise the young cowbirds. In this case, the Cowbird was much larger than the Sparrow, who to my eye looks completely exasperated. Canon R, RF 600 F11 lens – 1/320 at F11

The Price Of Adoption

Exasperated Chipping Sparrow and its much larger adoptive child, an immature Brown Headed Cowbird. Right under a feeder in our yard.
