| Pileated Woodpecker Family by Neva L Scheve |
Congratulations to our BirdSpotter Judges’ Choice winner, Neva Scheve of West End, NC for this fantastic shot of a Pileated Woodpecker family! Neva described how she was able to snap this photo:
A pair of Pileated Woodpeckers made a nest in my horse pasture in 2016. Every morning I would sit near the tree with my camera on a tripod and my Kindle to read while I spent time watching them. They didn’t mind me being there at all, and I was able to photograph the family from even before they peeked out of the hole until all three chicks left the nest.
You can attract Pileated Woodpeckers to nest near you too! If you live in their range, and in the correct habitat, consider building a nest box. Our sister project, NestWatch, has a handy construction plan here. While you’re at it, monitor the nest and report your nest’s data to NestWatch!
Submissions are still open for the current BirdSpotter category Cardinals and Friends. Submit any photo of any bird in the Cardinal family by midnight Eastern Time on Thursday, January 31, for a chance to win! Winners will be announced on Friday and Saturday, February 8 and 9. Biweekly People’s Choice and Judges’ Choice winners receive prizes from the Cornell Lab and our sponsor, Wild Birds Unlimited. Anyone can participate by entering a photo and voting for their favorites. Find out more about the BirdSpotter contest.
