Took this pic immediately after the hawk snagged the other bird in mid-air and then landed with it still in his talons. The prey was either a female cowbird or a junco, but I suspect cowbird because there was a big flock of blackbirds that included cowbirds flitting back and forth between feeders and trees and it didn’t look big enough to be a red-winged blackbird, or starling, which were the other birds in the flock. I had the impression that the hawk was as surprised as I was that he managed to catch his prey…It was a very spectacular catch in mid-air.
