Description

This downy woodpecker fed at my suet feeder for a week in January. It was remarkable because of its tan eye stripe and chest. Its white belly and extensive white spots on its wings do not agree with Sibley’s portrayal of the Pacific variety. Other local birders have suggested tannin staining, although the coloration on the head was very even and didn’t suggest external coloring . All the other Downy WPs at my feeder had the usual brilliant white chests and heads. Anybody seen a similar bird?
