This Starling showed up during a snow storm, and he seemed content to ignore the seeds and simply use the feeder as a little bit of shelter.

Martha T. Kane says:

I am observing this same behavior — European Starlings taking shelter on platform feeders — today in western Massachusetts (Westfield, MA) during high winds and wind chills below zero. February 3, 2023. I have not observed native birds taking shelter on feeders the way starlings have. I am wondering if some of these starlings may be ill? For example, could they have Salmonella or other disease that would not be readily apparent.
