A Red-breasted Nuthatch showed up at one of my feeders for the very first time—a safflower seed feeder on Oct 16, 2018…quite a surprise. I have the White-breasted Nuthatches in my yard year-round, but never before a Red-breasted, I presume because I’m surrounded by deciduous woods, where the Red-breasted, I believe, prefer predominantly evergreen forests. The bad news was that the bird appeared when it was getting dark and during a rain shower, so the light wasn’t good for photography…and I only got a single photo—just good enough for me to identify the bird.
