Description

Last Saturday was an extraordinary day for me! While photographing all my birds in my FeederWatch area, a big bird streaked across my camera lens. It was a Cooper’s hawk, perched in our Aspen tree, but he seemed nervous, crouched & very alert. As he flew off, I was amazed to see what spooked him-a magnificent Great Horned Owl, sleeping in our Ponderosa Pine tree! My photo captured the moment he flew off at dusk.

Thank you Paula! It was thrilling to get to observe this owl for six hours sleeping in our tree! Right at dusk, he woke up to & I was able to get this shot!

How fortunate you are to see an owl like this! I have never seen an owl except in captivity. They are so beautiful and elusive!

Linda Cunico says:

Yes Karen, I am very fortunate to have many resident Great Horned Owls since we’ve lived in Pueblo West, Colorado, but I hit the jackpot when he decided to sleep-over in our yard!!! Whooooo knows, maybe he’ll do it again! Their camouflaged body is amazing, so it pays to be observant-one could be living in trees near you! Curious where you live, since you’ve only seen owls in captivity.
