Description

This Juvenile Summer Tanager was captured recently
in Scott County KY. I was actually enjoying observing
a male and female Hairy Woodpecker feeding their
young when this colorful fella popped into the Black
Locust Tree directly beside the woodpecker’s tree
and began singing his little heart out. I couldn’t have
asked for a better setup with the blooms in the
background adding to this musical little fellow’s
show.

Just saw the juvenile summer tanager in the yaupon tree at 1:30 p.m. The male and female were together. I live in Palestine, Texas. Today’s date is May 4, 2020.

We just saw a juvenile whose colors were the most outstanding I have ever seen. Bright yellow belly joining a brilliant red head with mottled yellow as they met. He is singing his head off and staying curiously close to the house.

Holly Faulkner, Project Assistant says:

Hi Eugene, I wonder if you might have seen a Western Tanager – their range does slightly overlap with Summer Tanagers, and matches that yellow/red pattern you described. Check out Western Tanagers here and Summer Tanagers here, and see what you think!

Just spotted a juvenile in our holly tree and at the feeder. Beautiful bird!
