Description

Four years ago I observed a leucistic Dark-eyed Junco in the Spring feeding at our deck and what appeared to be the same one in the Fall. He had only several flecks of white on his head. He was back the following year in the Fall. Two years ago I saw two with leucism, but not the one I had seen initially. They appeared to have more white pigmentation on their heads. This year one with extensive white pigmentation on the head showed up in March and a second with even more extensive white pigmentation on the head and back appeared mid-April. We have a small group of Juncos that seem to be “resident” here year round. There are flocks of Juncos that arrive in the spring and fall and usually feed on our deck (primarily millet) for 1 to 4 weeks. This year a large flock has been here since mid-March possibly due to the cold weather.
