Description

This photo was taken on 30 January at the Irondequoit Bay Outlet bridge. The temperature was about +3 deg F and the wind was blowing at 20 to 30 mph. And yet there they were — approximately 35 mute swans (incl ~5 cygnets), all hunkered down on the ice with their magnificent necks laid back and nestled deeply into their back feathers. An astonishing survival strategy to me. There was open water close by in the channel where I trust they could feed.
