Peaks of Otter, Peaks, VA, USA

Description

My husband and I were hiking along a trail at Peaks of Otter last week when this little bird perched right in front of us. I kept looking in my book but couldn’t quite figure it out. Is it a juvenile? It has a bit of yellow on top of its head. Thought it may be a young Golden Crowned Kinglet but the wings didn’t look right. Any help would be appreciated. Thank you. Val Carter

Might be an Ovenbird.

Holly Faulkner says:

Hi Val,
This is indeed an Ovenbird, a secretive warbler that frequents forest habitat. For more information, visit our All About Birds page: https://www.allaboutbirds.org/guide/ovenbird
