The third time I approached him, he hopped away. Don’t know whether or not he injured his left wing.

Dark-eyed junco.
Have you seen it fly? If you suspect a bird is injured, you should call your local wildlife center and ask their advice.
There is too many juncos to track which one it is. It was only there for under ten minutes.
Didn’t fly after strike. Only hopped.
