Description

This woodpecker with the yellow head has been coming to my feeder since last winter. It is usually will another Red Bellied Woodpecker. I did see something mentioned here before about Xanthochroism and am wondering if that is the case with this woodpecker.

Red Bellied Woodpecker With A Yellow Head

I have a red bellied woodpecker with a yellow head. I am in Northern Michigan so I am pretty sure it would not be a Gold fronted woodpecker since they in Texas and Mexico.

Thank you for posting as I have observed an identical situation, a red bellied with the red head along with a yellow headed red bellied, in Mt. Pleasant, IA.

Dr says:

ALSO spotted in Northern Michigan March 2025
