Participant Photo: A surprise gold house finch

Although I always see house finches at my feeder, I only see the red. I can only assume this yellow feathered friend is also a house finch, as he socialized and fed with them. We have an ugly January and February here in Nanaimo with snow and cold temperatures at a much higher level than usual; my research suggests house finch are gold in Hawaii so its even more puzzling that I’ve seen one here!

Here in Medford Oregon, I spotted my first gold-colored house finch 03/11/2025 at my platform feeder. The bright gold replaced the usual red, and was brightest on crown, eyebrow, throat and breast. Dark striping was evident on flanks and belly.
