Participant Photo: Brown colored Downy Woodpecker
Additional images:
Bird was on our deck railing and the odd color caught my attention. I have been told that the bird is a Downy but I haven’t seen anything like this before. I have also looked in various well known Birding Sites. Nothing close, except in India, Ceylon, and Sri Lanka.

We had one at our feeder in MN near Mpls
Jan 1st – have never seen one like it – couldn’t find any info about it
Hairy woodpecker did not like it at feeder
I am south of the Twin Cities and have a female brown downy woodpecker that regularly visits my feeder. It caught my eye because I haven’t seen a brown one before. The one at my feeder looks just like yours pictured and yes that is a Downy. A Hairy woodpecker looks very similar to the Downy, the biggest difference is the size. Hairy’s are bigger.
I just found this post! I’m in Maine and we’ve had a brown Downy at our suet feeder. I knew it was a woodpecker, but the web doesn’t seem to think they can be brown. Welp, they’re wrong!
