Participant Photo: Chipping Sparrows in the winter
Additional images:
I had actually never seen a Chipping Sparrow here during the winter, so I was surprised how much duller, and somewhat darker they are at this time of the year.

Hi, Bob —
I looked out the window a moment ago and saw a small sparrow that I wasn’t sure about. I thought it must be a chippie in winter plumage, but then they are almost non-existent here in coastal Washington at this season. An immature Tree Sparrow might be more likely. I Googled on Chipping Sparrow images, and found your nice photo, which is a dead ringer for my bird here. Thanks for taking the time and trouble to post this, as it was quite helpful to me. Hope you’re enjoying acceptable weather there! Best regards, Lloyd Kiff
