I found this while looking for info on a cardinal with a very slightly strange bill and at first was sad seeing the image, thinking he might suffer. Seeing your description was such a cool relief! What a trooper. I wonder if the weird bill made him uniquely attractive to his mate like hybridization sometimes does in other birds.
