Participant Photo: Downy female on my porch spindle

I don’t know if it reminds her of a slim tree, but this little Downy Woodpecker female has taken to landing on one of the wooden balusters of my back porch railing. It’s the first time I’ve ever seen any bird do this. After landing, she doesn’t do anything, just sits there for a minute or two, as if trying to make up her mind about something. It makes me wonder…what the heck is she thinking about? What decision is she mulling over? If she starts drilling holes in my porch spindles, I’ll have to give her a stern talking to!
