  1. Thank you, Laura. Coming from you, that’s high praise indeed. She’s a good looking bird, especially since she has a deformed bill, but I might be fortunate in that it could be her bill that brings her to my feeders more frequently.

Hello Natalie, thanks for reaching out! Female Red-bellied Woodpeckers have a red nape, but lack the red crown, such as the individual in these photos. Both male and female Red-bellied Woodpeckers have pale bellies, and there can be color variations among them. For more info, check out Cornell’s All About Birds page on Red-bellied Woodpeckers here.

I have a male that shows up every morning at my feeders here in Acworth, GA. Just northwest from Atlanta. He visits feeder ALL day. I’ve named him Atticus. He’s been showing up for about a month.

  4. I saw a female in my bird feeder for the first time today. She was fairly large ~ shooed the other birds always until she was done eating. She was beautiful ~ I had never seen one before. I live in Iowa.

  5. I have both, male and female, at my feeder every am and off and on through out the day. The male likes to hang out in my Japanese Maple, as if he is taking a breather from the feeder. I live in Little Rock AR.

  6. I just saw one. First female ever. Usually just males. She looked just like the photo and fed on the ground. It is so dry in VA I think she was thirsty. Glad there is a place to post bird stuff. 😎.
