Participant Photo: Female Red-bellieid Woodpecker at a tray feeder
I make my own small tray feeders–it’s a lot cheaper than buying them, and it’s more fun–using sheets of perforated aluminum or plastic for the bottoms. I’ve found that, when I put out tray feeders with a variety of foods–seeds, fruit, nuts, dried mealworms– most birds, including woodpeckers, seem to like having all the food choices laid out before them, where they can pick out what they’d like at a given moment. Of course, my suet feeders still get a lot of action from woodpeckers.

I see you have SO MANY female pics of Mr. Red-bellied Woodpecker and we always get the Mr. but have never seen a female yet for all the years he has been around. And it’s daily when he is around. He has to have a mate…no? Never have seen a female yet. Enjoy seeing her though you though. Thanks!
