Participant Photo: Ferruginous Hawk
This regal hawk is the largest of all our Buteo hawks. They can be seen in all seasons in very open and dry country. We have six acres, so he has a good field for hunting his prey. Sadly, their numbers are seriously declining due to shooting and habitat loss.

This is actually a Red-tailed Hawk. The dark belly band is diagnostic for the species.
