Participant Photo: Ferruginous Hawk: Our Largest Buteo
First time I have seen a regal Ferruginous Hawk! Their wingspan can reach 56 inches and 23 inches in length! The huge hawk pictured was scanning the prairies on our property for a meal-maybe the prairie dogs that have moved into our neighborhood since this summer? Or the Eurasian Collared-Doves who feed in my Feederwatch area, because I found two dead, next to each other, but not eaten inside my gated yard. They mainly hunt from a perch.

You should be able to find your first Ferruginous Hawk in Colorado, but this is not one …
The pictured bird is a Red-tailed Hawk, but you’re on the right track and enjoy the search for your first Ferrug – and hope you get a photo of it too. Good Luck
