Do immature White crowned sparrows try out singing in mid-september in Indiana? I have heard what sounded like their song near by but was only able to find a couple of juvenile birds. Could adults be hiding up in the pine trees? Or does some other bird sound similar
Hi Polly, young birds will sometimes practice their songs this time of year, though if juveniles are nearby, there are likely adults as well. If the song doesn’t sound quite normal, it may be the juveniles working on getting it right!
We get visited by the White Crowned Sparrow in October they and stay until late March. We love to see them show up year after year. We are in the Central Valley of California.
