Welland, ON.: I believe that this is what VERY briefly stopped at my birdfeeder this week (early March ’26). A heavily barred black and white back and a brown head. When I lived in Niagara on the Lake, ON (on fruit farm, beside area with large trees) I regularly saw red bellied woodpeckers at my feeder, but I’ve never seen one here in my suburban yard. The visiting bird has had me stumped – the head was a warm brown colour and Red-Bellied is the only bird that it seemed to resemble.
