Participant Photo: Male loon defeats interloper .

I heard a commotion on the lake. I saw our male loon engaging in wing to wing combat with another male loon. A lot of splashing and a lot of chasing ensued. Finally the unwanted third party was sent on his way. I think he was lucky to escape with his life.
The winner rejoined the female for some heavy duty preening. His feathers were a real mess. I think he is just showing off for his lady love in this picture.
