Male Summer Tanager at our backyard feeder, January 6, 2020. This is a rare winter bird for Tallahassee, Florida. First time we’ve seen one in the winter! Came to the feeder and bath on January 8, one of my FeederWatch count days, so he was included in this year’s count.

I’m in Suwannee County Florida about 85 miles East of Tallahassee. Yesterday, I saw a tanager in my backyard. I believe it was a summer tanager. This is a first for me. I’ve only seen cardinals here but finally spotted this tanager. Also this spring/early summer, we’ve also had return of pair of red headed woodpeckers for first time in about 30 years ! Additionally, I’ve seen a pair of bob white quail this year. Haven’t seen either of these birds since the owners of native long leaf yellow pines were cut also about 25-30 yrs ago. Also saw the large gopher tortoise recently. All these spottings have me real excited and optimistic as to the resilience of these species. On my 10 acres, I planted an assortment of native hardwood trees and pines that I believe really are helping in the return of these native species. Or at least I hope so. Trying to do my part an let the Lord do the rest.
**the stand of original long leaf pines cut was by my neighbor across the road from me. It also had wiregrass but all that was clear cut then planted in slash pines. (sadly)!!
I just saw one for the first time today in my back garden it was perched on an azalea underneath a live oak I was just breathless
Today is Jan 26, 2025, and we had a Summer Tanager visit our feeder today, here in Tallahassee. We’ve never seen this kind of bird before so it was exciting to identify this pretty little guy!
I have had a beautiful male Summer Tanager at my video feeder for the last two days.
