Participant Photo: Red-bellied Woodpecker
I’ve come to think of this female Red-bellied Woodpecker as Mrs. Soot Dome, due to the patch of black feathers on the crown of her head. I enjoy when I see a bird with an irregularity of its feathers, because I can then distinguish that specific bird from all the others. And it probably is just a coincidence, but I’ve found that this happens most often with the Red-bellied Woodpeckers.
