Participant Photo: Red Crossbills-male and female
Additional images:
These two Red Crossbills arrived with a flock of Pine Siskins. They are not common in Vermont, and I have never seen them right in my front yard. They were eating grit in the driveway. I was thrilled to see them and get a few distant photos. I was especially surprised to see a female, which I’ve never seen before. They did not stay very long, but what a treat -a lucky find! Look at those amazing crossed bills, especially adapted for cracking seeds.
