The conventional ID for this bird based on range would be White Tailed Ptarmigan, which is mophologically virtually identical. However, what suggested the Rock Ptarmigan ID to me is the vocalization. According to the resource on this page

Rock Ptarmigan call is exactly what I heard clearly and at close range; the White-tailed call, not similar at all.
