Participant Photo: Rose-breasted Grosbeak males

I keep a record of the first sighting of the year for every bird species. By monitoring that record, I am forewarned about when to start paying special attention to watch for the arrival of each type of bird during their Spring and Autumn migrations (as well as to have my cameras ready). Since the Rose-breasted Grosbeaks always get to my yard between the 17th and 27th of April, I’ve been watching for them. Today, the 21st, the first of the Grosbeaks showed up—right within their normal arrival window. I’m always amazed at how consistent the birds are.
