Hi David, Size can be difficult to use to identify these two very similar hawks – even the largest Sharp-shinned can be as large as a small Cooper’s Hawk. That said, there are lots of other field marks to go by – check them out here and click on each row to expand a photo example.

The size seems wrong for a Sharp shinned hawk. I now think this was a juvenile coopers hawk.
